Church Sexton Job Description
with Parsonage as Compensation

The role of the Sexton is to maintain the physical facilities of the Congregational Church of Hollis. A major function of this position is to be available for emergency calls associated with fire detection system, well failure emergencies, plumbing leaks, storm damage and electrical or internet interruptions. This individual is also responsible for the parsonage upkeep, lawn care, leaf management and emergency coverage of parsonage facility issues. In order to provide the necessary coverage of both the church and parsonage it is important the individual selected resides in the parsonage. This position is an “at will” employment with housing in lieu of salary compensation. The Sexton and family will be required to vacate the parsonage if employment is terminated.

In addition to the general duties listed above, the Sexton will also be responsible for the following:

Building Maintenance Duties:

· On-call duties for occasional emergency calls.
· Coordinate with Church Trustees and volunteers for additional on-call needs.
· Coordinate with Church Trustees and Facilities Committee to oversee repair work.
· Conduct minor maintenance to church facilities (painting touch-up, light bulb replacement, etc.).
· Manage Homeseer System including thermostat programming and water usage. Respond to Homeseer alerts.
· Conduct NHDES water testing including sampling and taking sample to state labs.

Management Duties:

· Manage contract negotiation, work scheduling and payment of building contractors/ maintenance operators of equipment.
· Train and Coordinate coverage staffing for on-call emergency coverage.
· Oversee execution and ensure access for contracted services and individuals.
· Provide contact point for Gardening Ministry team.
· Provide contact point for Hospitality team involved with scheduled events requiring set up or break down assistance.
· Manage and maintain order in the storage areas in the church shed and storage rooms.
· Coordinate with Kitchen Ministry team for follow up after outside group use the kitchen, ensuring proper cleanliness and maintenance of all equipment.

Custodial Duties:

· Prepare and set up for church events as notified by church office.
· Vacuum the carpeted floors of the church weekly. Dust mop or sweep hard surface floors weekly. Spaces include the stairwells, entry ways, Hardy Hall, kitchen, Flagg Room, Austin Room, Parkhurst Room, Pastor’s office, Admin office and workroom, Emerson Chapel, Deacon’s kitchen and Sanctuary.
· Damp mop hard surface floors weekly and after major events. In wet or snowy weather, stairwells may require more frequent cleaning.
· Weekly kitchen cleaning to include sinks, counters and appliances.
· Order and restock dishwasher and sink supplies.
· Clean and sanitize restrooms 3 times/week.
· Return misplaced items.
· Remove trash (weekly or more often, as needed) – dumpster in rear of parking lot.
· Remove recycling to pink recycling bin. Put bin at curb per schedule provided by MD’s Recycling and Waste Removal.
· Weekly restocking of paper products. Monitor inventory of cleaning and paper supplies, coordinate purchase when needed.

Seasonal Duties:

· Provide leaf removal from church property including blower cleaning of patio weekly.
· Provide snow removal from church entrances, sidewalks and egress points.
· Manage irrigation system maintenance and watering schedule.
· Install and remove air conditioners seasonally.

Parsonage Specific Duties

· Occupy parsonage to maintain building security.
· Maintain parsonage grounds including lawn care and leaf removal. (Driveway snow plowing service provided.)
· Coordinate heating system, well, water softener and septic system maintenance as needed, using outside contractors when necessary.
· Maintain cleanliness and proper maintenance of parsonage.
· Maintain smoke and fire detectors, replace batteries annually.

This position is expected to require 18 to 24 hours weekly with significant variation week to week based on number of church events or maintenance projects ongoing. It is the responsibility of the Sexton to manage his/her time to meet the duties listed above. The Sexton will be required to notify the Trustees when they schedule vacation and to work with the Trustees to cover the cleaning tasks when they schedule vacation. The Sexton should maintain close contact with the administrative staff since these individuals frequently are the first church personnel to hear of maintenance issues.
